OUR EDITORIAL STAFF
When it comes to writing, our Members are the supreme backbone of this site, but our editors and writers are working hard to round things out and keep an eye on what our Members want most. Here's to this insightful group of word-filled artists.
OUR ADVISORS
As we built the foundation for DivineCaroline, we asked all kinds of
questions and reached out to these notable women to help us find the best
answers. We thank each one of them for their unvarnished responses, their
encouraging words and their continuing support.
Rebecca Brown
Editor-in-Chief
Rebecca Brown is a writer, a commercial and movie quoting junkie, a spelling bee champion, a pop culture addict, a salsa and burrito connoisseur, and inventor of the question mark. After thirteen years of defining target audiences and observing focus groups, she left to become an advertising copywriter. Feeling confined by taglines and large logos, Rebecca left for the brighter skies of DivineCaroline. She enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, biking, tall men, dogs, cardio tai boxing, and the occasional downward dog. Rebecca is currently dating Clive Owen, George Clooney, Cillian Murphy, and James McAvoy. She lives and plays in the greatest city in the world—San Francisco.
Brie Cadman
Editor Body & Soul, Neighborhood & World, Home & Food
Ever since kissing a banana slug in sixth grade, dissecting a fetal pig in high school, and kicking pre-med butt in organic
chemistry, Brie Cadman has really liked science. She was born and raised in the Napa Valley, where anaerobic respiration
produces ethanol on a regular basis. She earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from UC Berkeley, but never did figure
out how to synthesize anything worthwhile. So she left the lab in search of adventure in Asia. After experiencing the highs
of the Annapurna's and the lows of Giardia, she returned to pursue her Master's in Public Health at UC Berkeley. When she is
not giving the finger to big tobacco, she can be found running the hills, snowboarding the mountains, biking in skirts, and
sipping Zinfandel at family-owned Tulocay Winery.
Vicki Santillano
Staff Writer
Vicki graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in literature and a burning desire to find a job that she didn't hate (two years as an ice cream scooper can do that to a person). After backpacking through Europe and avoiding adulthood, she moved to San Francisco to achieve that goal and now finds herself happily immersed in writing—one of her biggest passions—at DivineCaroline. Outside of the office, she enjoys reading, cooking, dancing, shopping, exploring San Francisco, traveling, and finding the perfect burrito. Other big goals in life include seeing more of the world, being a better person, finding the perfect pair of jeans, and meeting Conan O'Brien (not necessarily in that order).
Shyla Batliwalla
Editorial Coordinator
After graduating from the University of California, Irvine with a degree in International Studies and Spanish, Shyla realized her true calling was to be a wordsmith. Living in almost a dozen places around the world has made her obsessed with discovering new cities and new ways to enjoy life. Albeit clichéd, her heart has always remained with her family in San Francisco. She is fanatical about food (cooking it and eating it), reading trashy British novels, writing stories with below-the-brow humor, painting Bombay taxicabs, elephants, and dancing to Madonna. She loves being a part of the team of innovative, fiery, and hilarious women at DivineCaroline. One day she hopes to run a marathon, have six-pack abs, and her own show on the Food Network. (Clearly, Shyla is a believer in dreams—even impossible ones.)
Bijani Mizell
Editorial Assistant
Born in L.A. and raised in the Bay Area, Bijani is (and always will be) a California girl. After graduating from Princeton with a BA in English Literature, she spent the next year working in New York in book publishing and six months after that working as a reporter for an English-language newspaper in Mongolia. These experiences, including interning at a fashion magazine in London, made her realize her burning passion for words ... especially reading, writing, and staying in touch with the cultural zeitgeist. She loves traveling, huge summer action movies (hello, Star Wars!), reading a good book while it's raining, dancing, and shopping at the farmer's market. Her future goals include learning how to surf, going back to Great Britain for the Glastonbury Music Festival, visiting Southeast Asia, and hiking through Scandinavia. Despite living in London, Paris, New York, and Mongolia, Bijani is glad to be back in the Bay Area. San Francisco is amazing and unique, as are most of the people who live here (naturally). Somehow, no matter however far away she moves, she can't resist the lure of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Natalie Josef
Managing Editor
A native of Virginia, Natalie Josef is an editor, writer, and former rock star. She has a BA in English from James Madison University and an MA in Women's Studies from the University of Arizona. A double Capricorn and grammar freak, she cannot stomach spelling errors, inappropriate uses of your and you're, and improper punctuation. Her likes include biking, cool sneakers, chocolate milk, the Pittsburgh Steelers, tattoos, and her iPod. Her passion is playing and composing music on the guitar—mostly classical and heavy metal. If she could do it all over, she would work with big cats. If you want to make her mad, hurt a polar bear. If you want to make her happy, quote lines from the Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park as often as possible. In her spare time, you can find her reading, sleeping, and staring at pictures of Emily Deschanel. Natalie has visited forty-two U.S. states and is ridiculously happy living in San Francisco.
Jennifer Hastings
Partner Coordinator
Jennifer is a California girl at heart, with a shy curiosity of the world and a crush on all things French. She loves when museums are open at night, getting her passport stamped, dollar oysters, DJs, the rare sunny days in San Francisco, and her nephew's giggle. She also loves having a rant with her dad and learning patience from her mother. She fears labels—all kinds, from political to clothing. She misses being in a classroom immensely and is working on finding substitutes. Future goals include running an eco-lodge, obtaining a pilot's license, and completing an around-the-world trip. Hopeless goals include finishing her laundry and making her boyfriend a decent meal. She is thrilled to be working amongst the divine writers, editors, and staff of DivineCaroline.
Allison Ford
Staff Writer
Allison moved from Ohio to New York City at age eighteen to be a performer. She appeared on film, on stage, and her voice appeared in soundtracks and videogames before she quit show business altogether to write full time. Now in San Francisco, she doesn't miss summer or winter and jogging along the Embarcadero always makes her smile. Although she yearns for New York pizza, she loves California, from the crazy hills of San Francisco to the way people eat avocado with everything. She's a voracious reader whose proudest accomplishment was reading The Canterbury Tales in the original Middle English. Her hidden talents are playing classical piano and dominating at Scattergories, and her deepest desires are to be a domestic goddess and to one day open up a Chik-Fil-A franchise.
Caitlin Goebel
Community Development Manager
Caitlin was born in Washington, DC where she learned her first language, Singalise. Her dad's job moved them to Mexico City where she embraced the language and culture. After five years, they moved one last time to beautiful Portland, Oregon. Her favorite memories are being stuck on a zodiac with a sperm whale surrounding her, having a fifty-foot glacier fall right in front of her eyes, swimming with sea lions, herding cattle in eastern Oregon, and most recently, getting engaged. Caitlin moved to San Francisco in 2004 to attend the University of San Francisco and graduated in 2007 with degrees in marketing and international business. When she isn't working, you can find her spending weekends in Calistoga, on a new travel adventure with her mom, searching for treasures at local flea markets, and watching SF Giants games with her fiancé. Right now, she's busy planning her upcoming wedding.
